How to cut cable TV

Problem: Cable TV is getting so expensive.

Solution(s): There have been times over the past few years where we have reduced costs by cutting cable TV and trying alternate methods of seeing local and some internet-based programming on our living room TV. One solution was to install the Pluto TV and Tubi apps on our Apple TV. However, that left us without seeing the local channels in Orlando.

To see local news, we added the app called Very Local to our Apple TV. This enabled us to see the local NBC news shows. But, that was not enough.

In order to get the local shows on networks such as NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX, we installed a GE Amplified Indoor HD Digital TV Antenna which was easy to install. The device is installed in the RF cable input at the back of our TV; it does not use USB or HDMI. However, if your local company allows TVs with antennas to receive digital programming over air, you are in luck like we are.

After installing the HD antenna, which looks similar to a sound bar you might buy at Target or Best Buy, we were able to program our TV receive the local channels over air without having cable TV. The resulting number and quality of on-air channels you will get in your area will vary. Success also depends on where in the house your TV and new antenna are located. Nevertheless, this setup represents a savings of about $105 per month for us. Good luck!
